Canine parvoviral enteritis is a highly contagious gastrointestinal disease of dogs. Early signs of parvo in dogs include acute onset of lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea, which is often bloody and foul-smelling. Other symptoms can include fever, abdominal pain, bloating, and weakness. Given how serious parvo is, it is critical to contact your primary veterinarian or Animal Emergency of Gainesville immediately if you notice any of these signs.

Lethargy: Your dog may seem unusually tired or have a severe lack of energy.

Loss of appetite: A significant decrease in the desire to eat or drink is a common first sign.

Vomiting: You may observe frequent vomiting.

Diarrhea: This is often severe, watery, and may contain blood and mucus, with a particularly foul smell.

Fever: A high fever is a common symptom.

Abdominal pain and bloating: Your dog may show signs of discomfort in their abdomen.

Weakness or collapse: As the disease progresses, weakness and collapse can occur.

Important: Contact your veterinarian immediately if you see any of these signs in your dog. The sooner parvo is diagnosed and treated, the better the chances of survival.

Seizures

Pet congestive heart failure (CHF) occurs when the heart can't pump blood efficiently, causing fluid to build up in the lungs and abdomen, leading to symptoms like coughing, difficulty breathing, fatigue, and lethargy. Early signs are often subtle, but as the condition progresses, symptoms become more severe, including a swollen abdomen, blue-tinged gums, and fainting or collapsing. This condition requires a veterinary diagnosis and can be caused by various factors, including age, genetic conditions, and infections. Symptoms to watch for

Coughing: A persistent cough, especially a "wet" or "phlegmy" one, is a common sign.

Breathing problems: Panting excessively and/or labored breathing are major indicators.

Exercise intolerance: Your pet may tire very easily, be reluctant to play or exercise, or seem weak and fatigued.

Lethargy: A general lack of energy or unusual tiredness.

Swollen abdomen: A distended or swollen belly can be caused by fluid buildup.

Blue-tinged gums: A bluish or grayish color to the gums indicates poor oxygen circulation.

Fainting or collapse: Sudden episodes of weakness or collapsing are signs of a severe issue.

Causes of CHF

Chronic valvular disease: Degeneration of heart valves, particularly common in small dogs.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM): Enlarged heart chambers with weakened contractions, common in large breeds.

Nutritional deficiencies: Such as a taurine deficiency.

Infections: Including heartworm disease.

Congenital heart defects: Inherited heart abnormalities.

When to see a veterinarianIf you notice any of these signs with your pet, contact your primary veterinarian or Animal Emergency of Gainesville immediately. Early detection and treatment are key to managing the condition and improving your pet's quality of life. Diagnosis for this condition is done through a physical exam, radiographs, echocardiogram, followed with a treatment plan to manage the fluid buildup and medications to support the heart.
